Does the DVSA notify you of recalls?
The DVSA maintains the recall register and can compel manufacturers to issue recalls, but it does not write to vehicle owners. You will be notified by your manufacturer — typically by post to the address held by the DVLA as registered keeper.
Who does what
DVSA
Oversees vehicle safety. Maintains the public recall register. Can order manufacturers to issue recalls. Does not contact individual owners.
Manufacturer
Responsible for identifying affected vehicles, notifying registered keepers by post, and arranging free repairs through their dealer network.
DVLA
Holds the registered keeper database. Manufacturers obtain keeper addresses from the DVLA to send recall letters. The DVLA itself does not issue recall notices.
CarRecall
Monitors the DVSA recall register and alerts you by email the moment a new recall is issued for your vehicle — faster than waiting for a letter.
How will the manufacturer contact me?
Manufacturers obtain registered keeper details from the DVLA and send recall notices by post to your registered address. The letter will include the nature of the defect, what risk it poses, and instructions on how to book your free repair.
Some manufacturers also contact owners by email or phone if they have those details on record from previous dealer visits, but postal notification is the primary and legally required method.
What if I never got a letter?
There are several reasons a recall letter might not reach you: you recently moved house and haven't updated your V5C logbook, the vehicle was a recent second-hand purchase and the DVLA address hasn't been updated, or the letter was simply lost in post. In all these cases, the recall is still open and you're still entitled to a free repair.
Don't rely on the letter arriving. The postal notification system has real gaps — particularly for used car buyers. Always keep your V5C address up to date with the DVLA, and use CarRecall to monitor your vehicle independently of the manufacturer's mailing list.
How long does the manufacturer have to notify me?
The DVSA expects manufacturers to begin notifying owners within a reasonable period after a recall is confirmed, but there's no fixed statutory deadline for when every owner must be contacted. Large recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles are typically rolled out in batches — so there can be a delay between the recall being publicly announced and your letter arriving.
Register with CarRecall: Because manufacturer letters can be delayed, lost, or sent to an old address, CarRecall provides a second layer of protection — alerting you by email as soon as a recall appears on the DVSA register, before the letter arrives.
Can I check independently without waiting?
Yes. You can check the DVSA recall register at any time using your registration number at gov.uk, or enter your reg on CarRecall for an instant result. If you register your email with CarRecall, you'll be alerted automatically — no need to remember to check.
