Recall Basics

Is a recall repair free?

Yes — always. Recall repairs in the UK are carried out at no cost to the vehicle owner. The manufacturer pays for all parts and labour, regardless of how old the car is or whether the warranty has expired.

Recall repairs are always free. You will never be charged for parts or labour on a recall, and you should refuse to pay if a dealer attempts to charge you. The manufacturer is legally and financially responsible for resolving the defect.

What's covered for free?

All parts required to fix the recalled defect
All labour costs at an authorised dealer or repair centre
The repair even if your manufacturer's warranty has expired
The repair even if you're not the original owner of the vehicle
Collection or delivery in serious cases where driving is not advised

What's not covered?

Unrelated faults or wear-and-tear items identified during the recall visit
Damage you caused to the vehicle yourself
Repairs carried out at an independent garage before the recall was issued (though you may be able to claim — see below)

Does it matter how old the car is?

No. There is no age limit on recall eligibility. A vehicle can be 15 years old and still qualify for a free recall repair if the defect is confirmed to affect it. The obligation sits with the manufacturer, not with any warranty period.

What if I already paid to fix the fault?

If you paid to have the recalled defect repaired before the recall was officially announced, you may be entitled to a reimbursement from the manufacturer. This isn't guaranteed — manufacturers handle these cases individually — but it's worth raising directly with the manufacturer's customer service team. Keep any receipts or invoices as evidence.

Tip: If a dealer tries to charge you for a recall repair, refuse to pay and contact the manufacturer's main customer service line directly. If the issue persists, the DVSA and Citizens Advice can provide further guidance.

Do I need to go to a main dealer?

For most recalls, yes — you'll be directed to an authorised dealer or service centre in the manufacturer's network. Independent garages generally cannot complete recall work unless they are specifically authorised by the manufacturer for that recall. The manufacturer will tell you which locations are approved when they contact you.

Don't delay booking. Even though the repair is free, some recalls have limited parts availability, particularly in the early stages. Contacting your dealer promptly means you're more likely to get an early appointment.
